Specialized Eye Care for Children at Pink City Eye & Retina Center
At Pink City Eye & Retina Center, we understand that a child’s eyes are not just smaller versions of adult eyes – they’re developing, delicate, and need special care. That’s why we offer dedicated Pediatric Ophthalmology services to care for children’s vision needs with extra attention, patience, and compassion.
Our team includes experienced Pediatric Ophthalmologists—commonly known as Children’s Eye Specialists—who have received special training to treat various eye problems in infants, toddlers, children, and teenagers. Whether it’s routine vision screening or advanced care like squint correction surgery, we provide it all under one roof here.
What is Pediatric Ophthalmology?
Pediatric Ophthalmology is a branch of eye care that focuses entirely on children’s vision and eye health. It is very different from adult eye care because children often cannot explain their problems or even know they have one. That’s why this specialty requires both medical expertise and a lot of patience.
At Pink City Eye & Retina Center, our Pediatric Ophthalmologists are doctors who have additional training to diagnose and treat various eye problems in children. They’re not only experienced in treating common issues like squint (strabismus) or lazy eye (amblyopia), but also well-versed in handling children in a friendly and comforting way.
Your child’s eyesight is invaluable — it shapes how they perceive, learn from, and engage with their surroundings. Our goal is to nurture and safeguard that vision right from infancy.
When Should Children Have Their First Eye Examination?
Gentle & Specialized Pediatric Eye Care at Pink City Eye & Retina Center
At Pink City Eye & Retina Center, we often meet parents who ask, “When should my child have their first eye check-up?” It’s a great question, and we’re happy to guide you with love and care.
Eye examinations are as vital as general health checkups for children. Good vision is essential for their cognitive development, curiosity, and academic progress. That’s why we believe every parent should know when and why their child needs a proper eye exam.
First Eye Check-Up – Right After Birth
Your child’s first eye screening usually happens at birth, right in the hospital. This is done by the pediatrician, who checks for a very important sign called the “Red Reflex” or “Red Glow.”
This red glow is a simple but powerful way to make sure that light is entering the baby’s eyes properly. If there’s any blockage—due to rare conditions like congenital cataract, eye tumors, or eye malformations—the red glow won’t be visible. Early detection in such cases can save vision—and sometimes even a life.
Should any issue be detected, your infant will be promptly referred to a specialized Pediatric Eye Doctor for further evaluation and we’re always here to support such little ones with the right care at Pink City Eye & Retina Center.
Follow-Up Eye Exams – 1 Year, 3 Years, 5 Years
If everything appears normal at birth, your child’s next eye check-ups should ideally be scheduled at:
✅ 1 year of age
✅ 3 years of age
✅ 5 years of age
These visits help us track how your child’s eyes are developing over time. At each stage, our experienced pediatric eye specialists check for things like:
Visual response and eye movement
Focus and alignment of the eyes
Signs of lazy eye (Amblyopia)
Early refractive errors (need for glasses)
Any hidden eye conditions
Even though your child may not speak or read yet, don’t worry—we use child-friendly tools and techniques like tracking toys, colorful pictures, and movement-based testing to assess their vision accurately and gently.
School Age & Beyond – Regular Vision Monitoring
Once your child begins school, it becomes even more important to check their eyes regularly. Why?
Because children may not realize they’re having trouble seeing clearly. They may simply adapt by sitting closer to the board, squinting, or avoiding reading. Vision issues left unaddressed can negatively impact school performance, increase eye fatigue, and lower your child’s self-esteem..
At Pink City Eye & Retina Center, we recommend:
Routine eye exams every year or two, especially if your child wears glasses or complains of visual discomfort.
Don’t delay an eye check-up if your child mentions symptoms like blurred vision, headaches, dry or irritated eyes, or trouble staying focused.
These issues have become even more common in the post-COVID world, where increased screen time has affected many children’s vision.
What Eye Drops Are Used for Children
At Pink City Eye & Retina Center, we understand how important your child’s eye health is, and we always aim to provide the best and most gentle care possible. When you visit us for a pediatric eye check-up, our child eye specialist (pediatric ophthalmologist) may need to use special eye drops during the examination.
These eye drops are completely safe and are only used when absolutely necessary. They serve two important purposes:
1. To Dilate (widen) the Pupils – This helps the eye doctor to get a clear and complete view of the back part of your child’s eyes, including the retina and optic nerve.
2. To Accurately Check the Eye Power (Glasses Number) – These drops temporarily relax the eye muscles so we can get the most accurate measurement of your child’s eyesight or glass prescription.
These eye drops may cause temporary blurry vision, especially for near work like reading or looking at screens. This effect usually lasts for up to 24 hours. It’s a completely normal and expected reaction, and there’s no need to worry. Your child might be a little sensitive to light for a few hours, so we suggest bringing sunglasses if you’re visiting us during the day.
The common names of the drops we use are:
· Cyclopentolate
· Tropicayl Plus
These drops are specially designed for children, and our experienced doctors use them with utmost care. Sometimes, especially in very young children, these drops help us understand if they have a hidden eye number, which they may not be able to express clearly.
Please keep in mind, because of the time it takes for the drops to work and the detailed examination that follows, a pediatric eye check-up may take around 45 minutes or sometimes a little more. We always request our parents to be a little patient, as this process helps us take better care of your child’s eyes.
At Pink City Eye & Retina Cente, we are here to guide you and your child every step of the way with kindness, care, and clarity. If you have any doubts or feel anxious about the process, feel free to ask our team — we are always happy to help!
What Is the Ideal Screen Time for Children?
Guidance from Pink City Eye & Retina Center
At Pink City Eye & Retina Center, we truly care about your child’s eye health and overall development. One of the most common questions we receive from concerned parents is about the right amount of screen time for children — and we’re here to help guide you with love, care, and accurate information.
For Children Under 2 Years (0–2 years)
Children under two years old should be kept away from all forms of screen exposure. This includes watching TV, using smartphones, tablets, or any other digital screens. At this early age, the brain and eyes are still developing, and screen exposure can interfere with healthy growth and bonding time with parents and the real world.
For Children Aged 2 to 4 Years
For toddlers aged 2–4, screen use should be minimal — ideally kept under an hour per day. Even during this short period, it’s important to monitor what they are watching and ensure it is age-appropriate, educational, and not overstimulating.
For Children Aged 5 Years and Above
Kids who are five and older should have no more than two hours of daily screen time for entertainment purposes. This includes watching cartoons, playing games, or using a mobile phone for entertainment. Online classes and school-related work are separate and not counted in these 2 hours, but breaks are still very important.
Important Tips for Parents from Our Child Eye Specialist
👁️ Break the Screen Time into Short Intervals
Instead of long hours, divide screen time into short sessions of 20–30 minutes each. After every session, ask your child to take a break, stretch, and look at something far away. This helps reduce eye strain and supports healthy vision.
🏃♂️ Encourage Outdoor Play
In a beautiful city, we are blessed with open spaces, parks, and playgrounds. Encourage your child to play and explore outdoors regularly, as exposure to natural daylight benefits eye development. Activities like running, cycling, and free play help in the development of their gross motor skills (like walking, jumping) and fine motor skills (like holding, writing).
🧠 Support Mental and Social Growth
Limiting screen time allows your child to talk, play, and interact with others, which helps in the development of their communication, emotional, and thinking abilities. Vision health is equally important as physical fitness and emotional wellbeing in a child’s growth.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Yes, contact lenses can be safe for children when used responsibly and under the guidance of an experienced pediatric ophthalmologist. At Pink City Eye & Retina Center, we ensure that contact lenses are prescribed and maintained correctly. Children must follow proper hygiene, remove the lenses before sleeping, and clean them every night. With correct guidance, contact lenses can be a great option, especially for children involved in sports or those who find glasses uncomfortable.
Headaches can sometimes be caused by eye problems, but they are more commonly linked to other factors like hunger, dehydration, lack of sleep, or stress. However, certain eye conditions like astigmatism or hyperopia (farsightedness) can cause eye strain if left uncorrected, leading to headaches. Another common cause is Convergence Insufficiency (CI), where difficulty in focusing on nearby objects while reading or doing close work can result in headaches. If your child is experiencing frequent headaches, it’s a good idea to visit our pediatric eye specialists for a thorough check-up.
At Pink City Eye & Retina Center, we are dedicated to helping parents understand the importance of early eye care and empowering them with reliable information. We actively organize educational workshops, community awareness programs, and school eye screening sessions. We also create informative content like videos, pamphlets, and social media posts, all designed to help parents recognize early signs of eye problems in their children. Our aim is to educate every parent about the importance of regular eye check-ups and how to maintain their child’s eye health.
A pediatric eye doctor focuses on diagnosing and treating vision problems in children, ranging from infants to teens. There is no strict “age limit” for seeing a pediatric ophthalmologist, as the primary focus is on the child’s growth and development. In our clinic, we treat children from birth to 18 years, addressing a wide range of vision issues—from congenital eye conditions to those that develop during school years.
The full form of IOP is Intraocular Pressure. In pediatrics, IOP refers to the pressure inside the eye. Monitoring IOP is essential in detecting and managing glaucoma—a condition that can affect children, though it is rare. At Pink City Eye & Retina Center, we use advanced methods to measure and monitor IOP during routine eye exams for children to ensure early detection of any potential eye issues.
The main purpose of a pediatric ophthalmology consultation at Pink City Eye & Retina Center, is to ensure the healthy development of your child’s eyes. Our expert pediatric eye specialists perform thorough eye examinations, diagnose conditions like lazy eye (amblyopia), squint (strabismus), refractive errors, and other eye disorders, and recommend appropriate treatments, including glasses or surgery if necessary. We aim to provide personalized, compassionate care, ensuring your child’s vision develops clearly and comfortably, allowing them to learn, grow, and interact with the world around them.
